A Sunday thought about Jesus in America

I am not a man of faith.

But for as long as I live, I will continue to ask questions about faith, about the different harmonies of the gospels, as they are preached in all religions around the world.

Here is the most pressing one on my mind right now:

How come my Christian friends in the United States don’t recognize Satan when he stands right in front of them?

I have always loved how American churches are people oriented. The best American churches are about living the message, not just talking about it. Listening to others, lending a helping hand, avoiding judgment of others… Giving, even if you have to count your pennies.

I don’t remember who said it first, but it is a brilliant statement: A human’s character is defined by how he treats someone who can do nothing for him in return.

As I am watching The United States of America disintegrate, with millions and millions unemployed, grossly uninformed, with sub par healthcare, where child mortality actually is on the rise, I am asking this simple question:

How does America treat the elderly, the weak, the poor and the unhealthy? How does America treat friends? Let’s put the American character to the test, and add a traditionally religious filter to it: What would Jesus say, if he saw you today?

If there indeed is a God, he is currently witnessing some of the worst sinning in generations.
