Funerals

As many of you know, I volunteer as a funeral conductor – meaning doing the job of the priest when a family wants a secular ceremony when a loved one has passed. Leading the ceremony, as simple as that.

Except right now, I do not. I am expecting a call from the hospital to get a new liver, most likely fairly soon. I just can’t take the risk that I would leave a family without an officiant with ten minutes notice. So I have put it on hold for now – surprised at how much I miss doing this. It has been incredibly rewarding, and a great way for me to serve my community on a volunteer basis. As soon as I am back on my feet, I will make sure to get back to this unusual way of getting to know families and stories that somehow always seem quite special.

And that tell me that this, all this, is not for nothing.
